How a company website should be

Home page is one important page of a website. But how to design a homepage for a company's website? In your opinion and experience, which content should be displayed on home page of a company's website? Which content is important for the visitors?

Which rule should we keep in mind when we are designing a home page for a company's website?
I think it is best to start from the basics:
* Here is where you are
* This is the value we offer
* Here is where you can go

Remember to address the Visitor's need for service or information, not your need to impress him or her. If you absolutely know of some item they need or activity they will want to do, put it on the home page, the whole idea of making them work for it will surely make them leave.

When designing a home page you should definetely keep in mind to simple things: your company and your customers. You should make sure that your webpage gives an accurate reflection of your own business. For example, a local gardening company may want to have a green, bright website, and possibly have a picture of a pretty garden. You also want to keep in mind your customer. You want the content and feel of your homepage to let your customer know what you plan to do for them and what who you are as a company. There are plenty of websites that I have gone on where I couldn't tell what the company was about even after looking throughout the whole website.

The last thought is that you want to entice the customer to want more: either because they want more information or they want to use your services. So make sure you have a call to action (ex. "check out some of the plans we have!")
